Bichir tank planning

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My barbs are over 3.5 inches currently I would say. I know I have a huge fat one that is closer to 6.
Sorry should have mentioned I'm upgrading, my house is too small to try and keep a lot of the tanks I have. So I have to get rid of my 46 and 60 to make room. I know that I currently have some tetra and guppies, but I am confident that they will get eaten. And probably my harlequin rasbora.
So hopefully my inability to properly convey an idea through type written communication didn't throw you off. I meant to say as long as the polys mouths are smaller then the barbs you'll probably be ok. Geesh!
Sounds like the barbs should be ok! Definite no go on rasboras, guppies and depends on what kind of tetra.
I did have some giant danios when I first started the 75 as the dels got bigger giant danios started to die. Usually kinda gruesome missing stomachs faces crushed. Never saw it happening and I have a ctenopoma that's pretty big too so may be that the cteno killed them and polys were just there right time right place since cteno couldn't swallow them. Not sure.

How do you know how big their mouths get? You guys have commented that a couple times but it does not give me an indication on how big they get, do they get up to like 3 inches or more line 1.5-2 inches?
Lol my tetra would get eaten, they are neons and cardinals.

No one will be able to tell you that. Even if someone were to take a measurment of there polys mouth it wouldnt be accurate for the purposes your thinking of. Qhen they bite/eat the jaw/mouth expands or stretches like most other fish.

Take a look at all of the threads in the poly section to get an idea.

If your looking to go with a community setting with smaller fish (7 inches or less) stay away from the big guys and go with smaller upper jaw species. Ornates get get 20 inches some larger, some members have monster teugs though thinner they can hit 20+ weeksi grow slow but thick as hell and have big mouths, those 3 and any lower jaw wont work for u

thats why i was thinking of changing to a Del and/or a gold dust, since they are smaller. that way fish that are around 4 inches "might" be safe. lol i would love to spend some time going through more of the forums here, gets hard to with working so much and 3 kids who are to young to really enjoy fish.

You would have bettee odds with a del but ime nothing is gauranteed...but thats what makes the hobby so addictive lol

A few yrs ago i had some smaller lower jaws couldnt remember how big the del was at the time but she had no problem putting down 3 × 3 inch fat mollys. I say try it ya never know

At the same time my WC Del (9+") doesn't touch the Congo tetras which are 3+ inches.

Individual fish temperament is huge. As said, you just never know.
