Bichir Tankmate Rule Admendment...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My point with the black widow was that it was more than twice as wide as the bichirs mouth, but he still grabbed it width-wise even though there was no chance that he'd be able to eat it...

yeah... I'm not to worried about that guy... I could care less if he gets munched. The CAE's coloration is really interesting, though... (not really on topic...)

First of all, I would encourage You to get a larger tank. Senegalus can easily grow to 10-12inch, which is quite large, if You consider, that it needs hideouts as well, and that You want other fish together with it.

Depending on the character, they can be very easy, don't touch a neon or they can kill everything, even an ancistrus, and killing a swimming cactus is not that easy. Most bichirs will only kill other large inhabitants when stressed. To decrease stress You should offer them hidingplaces and space.

If You have one hidingplace, one senegalus and one ancistrus for example, they will fight for the one hidingplace, and finally, one day, the ancistrus will loose.

So far... Little Buddy is actually quite timid... but he'll still come up to the side of the tank when I press my finger on it and follow it around the side of the tank. Maybe when he's older I'll try and start the hand-feeding. I'm sure he'd do it.

hell, i have a 120g and when my ornate was 4-6" it attacked my 3-4" syn.euruptus catfish but couldn't swallow it just dragged it around his tank well he let it go and it swam away. i saw it for 3-4 days afterwards then never saw it again but that night i saw a bulge in my ornates belly still don't know how it swallowed the fish because of its spikey dorsal fin but it was gone. the ornate never touched the other one and it is know about 5-7" and hides in my big rock piece. looks great when i see him and knoiw my ornates are even bigger but i keep them fed better knoiw so they wont mess with it.

My 4.5" well-fed Ornate is constantly stalking & trying to devour a 4" Pimlodella Pictus....yet he leaves the 2.5" clown loach alone.

The Pictus cat comes out today, otherwise I'm confident it would just be a matter of time......
