I have no clue why they do that but sometimes all my bichirs freak out. Yesterday i come in my room and suddenly all bichirs smash around in the tank like crazy, one even went upwards crashing against the tank lid...it looks like no one was injured but i have no clue whats going on...they are normally very calm and then freak out at random times. Worst of them are my laps and the big ornate.

Happens, it's due to their poor vision so they can't recognize humans as food etc like an Oscar could, so they can just asses shadows and sudden movement, so if that happens, even if a million times, as you walk in, instinct will make them try to flee.

i really fear they can hurt themself in such an event. The big ornate smashed with so much power into so,e drift wood, that it did fall on its side and i had to fix it.
Doesn't sound good for the ornate... Also floating plants and dimmer tanks with a black background and maybe even sides will help.

. my tank is really dark and dim, bery much cover and stuff.
