Bichir with cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had senegals mixed with uarus, green and red sevs, geos and gymogeophagus. I had no aggression problems. When I fed I had stuff to float on the top for the chiclids and things to sink for the polys and plecos. All was good in the hood.

Seriously! I have a 16" congi and I wouldn't risk it. Those dovii's can do some nasty damage to any fish.

can you gyys please show me some proof where this combo of bichir+dovii becomes a problem? im going to research this myself. but so far the dovii stays next to the weeksii quite often but shows no aggression at all.

I don't think a lot of people have actually tried the combo, due to the fact that dovii have the reputation of not being able to cohab with other fish often. A poly is a sitting duck if a large male dovii decides he doesn't want to share his tank anymore.

It could definitely work, depending on the individual dovii. It's just risky, and I'd assume people don't want to risk a fairly costly fish to test it out.

I don't have any personal evidence but I've heard the stories and seen the damage a large dovii can do and that's just not a risk I'm willing to take with my prized fish. I'm a huge risk taker too. Right now I have an aba aba knife, which has a reputation of killing everything in site, housed with 3 payara's and an African brown knife and they've been living peacefully for close to 8 months now. This will probably change when it's older but for now, everything is good. If I were to try to put a dovii with my bichirs, I would have no choice but to start with a large one cuz a small one would get ripped to shreds either by the bichirs or 1 of my H. armatus.

my bichir is doing great in a tank with 2 jags 1 midevil and 2 featae, also 2 plecos one common and one royal. keep in mind they are all within the 2-3.5 inch range. iv had probably 5 dovii in my life and nothing has survived in its tank other than a female not even a pleco.

It all depends on the fish. My Dovii was a creampuff. I kept lots of mixed catfish with him. My Umbee was a different matter, he had to have a bachelor suite. My Senegal is in with Cubans, Argentae, Heckelii, JDs. If anything all the cichlids seem to get out of his way when he comes around haha.

iv noticed the same thing actually, my senegal chills in the same flower pot as my male festae and hes the most dominate in the tank
