how well do bichirs coexsist with live plants?
i'm curious if they damage them up a fair bit. stocking them in pots slightly elevated might help a bit while swimming along the bottom and divert them, or with some rocks around.
i was wondering if anyone has had great success or regret stories about live plants with a medium to full grown bichir.
thank you

what kind of bichir, there is a vast difference in responses if it is a senegalus vs an endlicheri

When my endlis were small, I had their tank planted but as they have grown (over 20" each, now), they just move everything in teh tank at will (including pots, wood, etc) and only floating plants will work.

yes i was speaking pretty general.
skimming through the media longue i have seen some planted tanks with small to juvi sized bichirs.

would you say the sens are more tolerant/relable with planted tanks?

Like said above, depends on the species and size.

I couldnt imagine my big guys in a planted setup, all it would take is my big Ansorgii or Ornate to get pissed off when I turn on my lights and dart accross the tank destroying a planted setup.

well, they are more active nocturnally

I would really recommend you reading through the polypterus primer stickied at the top of the section. You will likely find answers to most of your questions, and learn a lot about bichir in the process.

im currently trying anubias and java fern ties to driftwood. much harder for them to move the driftwood around. so far the anubias seems to have been lasting.
I have 2 8-10" bichirs (delhezi and palmas polli).

common activity to get pissed off when its lights out?

I have a crappy lights that flicker for a couple seconds before they cut on, so my expierences might be a little different than others.

Anything tied down works I have Java moss n fern on some drift wood. I also have three 24in swords I just tie a rock to the bottom of each of those. I only have one 14in ornate and my 7 in baby mbu.
