A deeply rooted sand bed helps, young bichirs enjoy the coverage of plants too!
I have some young delhezis that like to hide in my java fern.

Plants and polys are a great combo. I have found plants reduce the "freak" out episodes that can happen. A good substrate and established roots keep most uprooting in check. Hides overstocking effectively Horrible iPad pics but hard to see the 13 Birchers lurking in there including 22" weeksii and congicus. Personally it fills a void. I am done adding fish so I ad plants
