Bichirs and (cs/sa)Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea since the tank is 24 tall id go with the barbs ull see them swiming all around and to tell u the truth probly around half the bioload of a gt they are swimers and dont need a territory tend to chill in the middle id just get all 8 at once but make sure they all look healthy but in the end the barbs will mean less filteration needed for the 65.... if u like the look of plastic plants u could add a few in the back corners if u put a med/large rock on the bottem plastic part but plants arnt needed....if u have a QT tank id add the barbs in there for a bit just to make sure they are all healthy kinda a must imo when adding that many fish to any tank but if u go to a good store u should be fine.....

As for a raphel catfish they are cool but they arnt very active at first but after a few months in my tank id see my 8-10" one looking for food. if u where to get one id only add 1 maybe 2 as they get much larger than pictus...both are cool catfish and will work in the tank... I also would add the barbs in first then wait like a week to 2 weeks then add the catfish just so u know ur filter can handel more bioload.... If u keep ur eye on a tank that u just added fish to ull be fine and in a month it will look like a totaly different tank.

If I go with 8 tiger barbs, should I add them all at once or in two groups over the course of two weeks? I'm liking the idea more the more I read about them.

Will a striped raphael cat do ok on its own or does it need a few of its own kind? I'd like to have a small catfish of some sort, but I think 3 of them might be overkill...I dunno
add all the barbs at once and the striped Raphael cat will do fine on it own.

Cool, thats all good to know.

I'm still tempted to go for a green terror:\ My wife keeps talking me into it:ROFL:
The logic is...I should be getting a salary here soon, and then next year when our lease is up we'd be moving into a house, at which point we'd be able to afford another tank (hopefully at least a 75, maybe a 100+). And if that falls through and we end up with a troublesome tank, we bring the problematic child back to the lfs.

At the same time...I'm not 100% comfortable doing it like that. I think we'll probably end up with the tiger barbs, but it won't be for a few more weeks. For now I think we're going to pick up some convicts and see if we can't get a good breeding pair.

On another note, we stopped in at petsmart last night to see if they were having that special sale (they were, but it was lacking...penguin tetras were the coolest special they had) and I came across syndontis cats. They looked pretty damn cool and the card says they only get to 6 inches. I'm torn between 3 pictus cats, 1 striped raphael, or X syndontis cats (dunno anything about them) or whatever else, or nothing in this department. I just don't know.

I think the plan for now is...get convicts, start breeding (in the 20gal). Once my 65 is a little more stable, add 8 tiger barbs. Let it all sit for a minute and decide if we want to try and add cats or anything else.

I wouldnt listen to ANYTHING anyone at petsmart tells you and know that 75% of the time you get fish from there, they will have ich. All of their tanks have a central filtering system and a lot of the fish, after traveling, have ich from the stress of it all, so it gets filtered into every tank.

As far as their "sizing" cards go...I had a syno cat from there that was almost a foot long and the card said 5". My gf bought a banded leporinus from there that got over a foot. I told her it would and she kept saying no, it wouldnt because their card said 4" max. Their pacu card says 12"...and we all know pacus get way bigger than that.

You want the best help in Raleigh with your tank, stocking and the best selection of fish? Go to Fish World Aquarium 2205 Westinghouse Blvd #109 and ask for Adam. He can help you with anything you need and can order you just about any fish you want.

Yeah I don't take word from petsmart, I do listen to the ones that sound knowledgeable, but then I come back and either ask here or at fish world. We got a little bit of help from adam back when we FIRST set up our 20 (I failed miserably with that first attempt) and have since gotten some advice from two other employees there. Thats the store that I consider my LFS, they know what they're talking about, one of the employees actually told me to come back when Adam was in when I started asking about my bichirs.

But to reiterate...yeah I know petsmarts cards are generally unreliable, but some of them are pretty accurate, so I'll still ask just to see if whatever I was looking at is actually an option, or if the card is wrong. I mean their cards said both jack dempseys and green terrors are 6" max...pacu's do say 24" around here, but yeah their mess is all screwed up.

Even after all the advice and plans I make talking to people here, I intend to stop at fish world and get final word there. At this point though I'm leaning heavily towards a school of tiger barbs and then seeing what else would make sense after that settles. We'll see. I still probably have at least another week maybe two before I can add any of them to the tank.
