Bichirs in a 100G

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what exactly do you define as upper jaw polys? i'm a little new but have been doing a lot of research. But i have heard a lot of people say that

The upper/lower jaw thing is explained in the primer.
You could keep way more than 2 sens in that tank, and it will take an ornate a while to get too big for it, so if you're planning on upgrading to something with a bigger footprint (5x2' minimum for ornates IMO) then get a few of each.

Okay thats what i was planning to do. Thanks for all the advice. What about Endli or dez?

Yes to del, no to endli.

You could get a good combo of senegals, albino senegals, and delhezis in there. and many other species

Well looks like thats what i will be doing. Thank you very much.

Go for it! Get as many as you can afford. Most LFS sells captive breeds bichirs anyway and even a captive endli will only max out 16-18 inches or smaller. Just make sure your filter can hold the bio-load. Bichirs looks better when there are more in the tank. 75g is actually a minimum bichir pile comm IMO. Any tank with less than 18" width and less than 40" length won't work for a upper/lower jaw bichir comm. It might only work with upper jaw bichir minus the ornate, weeksii and the tuegelsi.

Small upper jaw species
-Polypterus senegalus senegalus
-Polyopterus mokelembembe
-Polypterus palmas palmas
-Polypterus palmas buettikofferi
-Polypterus delhezi
-Polypterys palmas polli
-Polypterus retroppinis

Large upper jaw species
-Polypterus weeksii
-Polypterus tuegelsi
-Polypterus ornatipinnis

Lower jaw species
-Polypterus bichir lapradei
-Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri
-Polypterus ansorgii
-Polypterus bichir bichir
-Polypterus endlicheri congicus

Just stay away from these three species as even captive breed can get up to 20"+.
-Polypterus ansorgii
-Polypterus bichir bichir
-Polypterus endlicheri congicus

they would just pile up with each otehr with no problems at all, just with proper filtration.
