I doubt it. Bichirs are slow and extremely primitive hunters with poor eye sight.
@NorthwoodsHunterWI Don’t underestimate them. They are far better hunters than most think. I learned that the hard way. To this day I still don’t know how my 7” ornate I was growing out in my community tank caught and ate an adult pictus catfish. She got it head first. Granted, she was a wild caught specimen that I owned many years ago.
Fish-Story Gotcha. Thank you! A peer told me that bichirs can be trusted only with fish bigger than them. So that might be why your pictus was doomed sooner or later, despite the pictus speed and smarts. Still a 7" stick-shaped bichir vs a 5" adult pictus is hard to imagine, I totally agree.
