Would these be suitable tankmates? The bichirs would be P. senegalus and P. ornatipinnis in a 75 as youngsters, and then into a 125 as adults.

I am only asking because I saw this listed online as a good stocking plan, and don't know anything about Tiger Dats.

A senegal will be too small for a dat. I think the ornate will be fine as long as one is not much bigger than the other to be eaten.

Yeah I would just put the ornate in.

I think they would both be fine but it would all depend on size. I wouldn't worry much about a full grown senegal getting eaten by a dat. Plus, given their respective growth rates I would expect that the senegal would probably outgrow the dat for the first few years. I currently have a 5" enlicheri growing out with a 3" dat. They get along fine for the most part but the dat is a very aggressive eater and sometimes and if the bichir takes too long to get his food down he sometimes gets nailed in the head by the dat trying to steal it. I'm confident that I wouldn't have any problems if I moved the dat in with my 7" senegal.

dats grow quite slow.

i have 12 dats right now and they are agressive eaters indeed. i would suggest you have more than enough feeders for both dats and bichirs to have. my dats just tries to eat all the feeders. in 24 hrs all gone in their tummy. bichirs are slow eaters when they are young. try to get a hunter bichir to match with an agressive dat eater.:D

That perceived problem goes away if you don't use feeders. I feed my dats frozen krill and market prawns. I add sinking pellets for the bichirs. The lucky bichirs get some leftover krill and prawns and all the sinking pellets, which the dats generally ignore.

My bichir pretty much ignores pellets, but it's tought for me to get them to him since he shares a tank with a fat @$$ angelfish who snarfs everything up. I need to get a clear tube to use as a feeding tool.

Sounds like a Dat might be an interesting addition. How large do they generally get??

I have a Poly Ornatipinnis & Senagalus in with an Indo & Silver Dat. I stuff the tigers first & then feed the bichirs. I have no problems with their compatability at all & the Dats leave the bichirs alone. ROB

no problem with the mix, but IMO your tank is too small for a fully mature dat and ornate and..... you need a bigger tank.

I am NOT a tank Nazi... I have too many fish and too big fish in my own tanks... but that doesn't make it right. Just makes me a bad fishkeeper ..... be better.
