ok, as of now i don't have any idea how to make it more shall i say, "hospitable" for them.

How much gph does it produce? You can use a valve to ajust the gph.

That gph is just fine with bichirs. I have. 1200 gph and when it comes out of the outtake it's about 850 gph. I place it a bit up of the water to create air bubbles to break the surface.

It won't create bubble if you submerge the outtake. Place it above water level.

I've only kept rope fish up to this point and they like slow currents so they can troll. I imagine their bigger cousins are quite similar.
