big 16" Orion dying help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This Happens with large Cichla from time to time They go into shock and shut down Keep him Upright and even direct a power head bubbles and all toward him a few inches away while you hold him might help him snap out of it ....Another question are there any areas on the body turning Black ???if so he has internal injury ......

i called it quits. was just getting weaker and weaker. held it against the power head for atleast and hour and a half. near his tail went black but i think that was from me holding him. i held him for a long time and took off the slim coat.

took him out and measured at 18" so sad : ( , i dont even feel like eating dinner.

Sending positive vibes your way bro, good luck

From DJ/MC Decker

I'm sorry about your loss! I had a couple of same experience when transporting Orino and Kelberi in the past... I just chalked it up as due to moving stress.

Thats really unfortunate - i'm very sorry to hear it.

I bought two Temensis several months ago and they had to travel around 200 miles - the man had some work up my way so kindly delivered them for free as he was passing me on the motorway.

He had packed both of them in the same box, it wasn't a particularly large box and the fish were 16 - 18 inch.

Guess you know how they looked when i opened the box up? I just wrote them off straight away but the guy who delivered was insistant on putting them in my tank, reluctantly i agreed and they both sunk belly up, picked them up off the sand and held them infront of my outlet for 45 minutes - had to go to work so sat them in a towel with the current going through.

Come home 8 hour later, one died one managed to hold his own weight and made a full recovery so it's always worth trying to put them infront of a powerhead is my point

I hope the rest of your fish do well.

Bummer deal man, sorry for your loss. IME I found that Orinos seem to stress out the most out of all the different cichla I have during transporting, I've even lost two healthy strong fish (Orino's) like yours from a simple quick move from one tank to a next side by side... They seem to stress out BAD when having to be caught and netted- I try not to move them around too much anymore due to this - However if I must move an Orino the key for me seems to net them before their even aware your after them and net them first if others are to be transferred. I've been successful using a huge net (one of those huge catfish nets you can buy in sports stores) ....You want to avoid the cat and mouse game when trying to catch him, this makes him aware your after him and they tend to stress out very bad during this time...You want to Swipe the Orino up quick in one shot with the net before he even knows whats going on, try to avoid putting him into a container if possible and transport directly to the new aquarium, pond or pool ASAP. For me this method has worked the best without losing one yet, but it cost me two Orinos to learn this - Just my two cents -

^ THIS. I've seen many cichla, small and large, go into shock after being chased with a net. They'll go belly up for no reason and just die. It's happened to me, and I've seen it happen. Fish that I've sold have died on the way to the new owners house.
