Way off topic but ignorant...lack the ability to learn??? - really, dude????Compared to the rest of the industrialized world, our education system ranks pretty poorly: http://putourkidsfirst.com/kidsfirst/education_ratings_US.asp

YES...really Dude. You know how long thats been the case? Ive seen those same stats forever. Whens the last time the USA had the highest ranked education system?

Thank political correctness, diversity, hippies, race based initiatives, absurd amounts of self guilt for our history of slavery, unions, illegal immigration, lawyers & a failure of a welfare system for us starting the trip going down in flames. Yippee...Diversity is king...

We're getting way off topic, let's get back to that dam. What types of fishes are indiginous to that regon? What species will be impacted?

I wouldnt have even guessed that we were then. If I had to, I would have guessed the 50s.

Wondering about the same thing myself.

Maybe we all should start breeding them if possible. The genetic diversity will be lost with the wild population, but at least we can help to maintain some "zoo strains"...really sad situation.

Here is a good summary of the history of the progress from the Rainforest Foundation: http://www.rainforestfoundationuk.org/files/Belo%20Monte%20Factsheet.pdf including this:

"Fish stocks: would be drastically reduced, some species likely to go extinct. People in the area currently get 70% of their protein from fish and river animals. The Xingu River is one of the richest in fish species in the world, containing 3 – 4 times as many species than all of Europe. Ornamental fish (an economic activity in the region), would be destroyed."

Here is the Expert Panel's Assessment of the Dam's viability and environmental impact: http://www.internationalrivers.org/files/EXEC SUMMARY ENGLISH_0.pdf

Education in the US was much better back in the days before this, right???!!! :(

At least in California, the passage of Prop 13 was the nail in the coffin of public education:

Thats not what I was implying at all. I was merely referencing a time when we didnt have violence, drugs & lack of respect for elders in the classrooms and a dropout rate as high as it is now. Also a time when we allowed corporal punishment, so if youre reasoning for all that is the brown vs. the board of education case, so be it.

I believe everyone should be treated equally, regardless of race, religion, sex or sexual orientation. Nothing for one that the other shouldnt get...no special privileges/govt. grants/programs etc for one race, religion, sex or sexual orientation that any others shouldnt get. Doesnt get more fair than that.

Since this could go on and on and on and is a complete derailment of Peters original topic, this will be my last post regarding "modern social problems".

but of course, drugs, violence and failing to graduate from high school didn't begin until much later than the 50's...

I agree - back on topic... Sorry for the derail Peter...

Let's at least agree that dams in the Amazon and the US education system SUCKS!

(By the way, the US system sucks because of bad parents and policital correctness, IMO. I remember the threat of being spanked in school. Now, students openly defy teachers...)
