behind my iMac.... Southampton UK.
Hey guys, i just wanted to get a thread together for everyone who keeps larger breed dogs to discuss food health and show off there dogs...

Ive got a Caucasian Ovcharka (shepherd) puppy and a black labrodor. my pic thread for the CO is here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...le-new-monster-addition-(Liz-pay-attention-D)

for those of you who dont know im form the UK and here we havnt had the food scandals concerning dog food you have in the states and most people still widely feed comercial feed n kibble's... Ive been doing lotts of reading into feeding raw and BARF diets and just wondered what you guys feed you dogs, i've had a lil chat with a couple of people about this but most people are not talking about feeding larger breeds and just wondering if and how people supplement the diets they feed n how often?

anyway keen to see what breeds are scattered about among our members n here about your dogs...

my dogs will never eat dog food again.. theres just not enough quality in it even if you buy the most expensive types... but it is not for everyone..certainly people on a tight budget and people that work and are gone all day.. need something easy and practical to feed... but to them i say try to supplement the diet on occasion with boiled chicken for extra protein.. some cottage cheese and yogurt... even oatmeal without the sugar... and most of all a sweet potatoe... they are packed with nutrution..

Cheers Liz, He is loving sweet potato! thank you for the tip on that one, he really does love it too :headbang2

at the moment foods on his list of stuff he is taking and digesting with no problems are:
raw: chicken, turkey, lamb all with bones. beef mince, cottage cheese, eggs with shell, white fish, salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, sweet potato and also not regularly but when im feeding the iggy he wil take green beans, Swede and butternut squash from my hand to....

im mainly worried about calcium levels in particular, ive been reading lotts of people recommending using kelp and alfala powders as supplements with great results and salmon oil too... think im going to order some of each and see how he gets on, certainly kelp is good for humans and hair and he has enough hair! lol...

you are doing wonderful job of raising him.. he is going to be the ultimate... i would also give a good puppy vitamin.. with calcium added.. for his bones... i love all the foods you listed.. these are excellent.. and expensive but worth it... next dog i get will eat this way from day one.. but glad i found out now so never too late.. brown rice is good too... and pumkin in the can. packed with vitamins... just no little splinter type bones.. other bones add calcium...

Would chicken bones not be too risky for these dogs? They splinter easily. My dobie eats practically anything except rice and dog food. I still wonder until now if I made a mistake feeding him meat as a pup. He seems rather choosy with his foods. The rest of my dogs though are not as troublesome to feed. I still have to teach my spaniel to recognize properly what she should eat because she eats almost anything. God help me on this one. *faints*

I should not forget my late Belgian Malinois will eat just about anything. Rest in peace, my Toffee.

Hmm, never put any thought into DIY foods as you guys listed. Ill be doing some doggy food research now :)

Is it fair to say these diets listed are for all size dogs?

sweet i love corso's! my best mate has a gorgeous female called Tipo my Bear is quite in love with her... lol

Lupin cooked bones of any kinda risk a high chance of splintering particularly chicken bones hence the old wive's tale of dont feed chicken bones to dogs raw bones are fine and i hear you on that spaniel i have fat black lab with nuts food drive she is a pain but i love her dearly... I love Mal's they are such characters, i bet u miss him lots!

West1: yes of corse bro B.A.R.F stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It certainly can be applied to any breed.

yes.. all dogs should be eating healthier foods like these.. if you can afford it and if you have the time .. it does make a difference..
