Big dogs: food, heath and exercise...

Liz i hate to disagree but find me one account anywhere of a raw bone splintering on a dog... choking hazard maybe but splintering not heard of... I believe there is an excetion but its actually pork bones that can splinter raw? but i have no intention of feeding pig so its a mute point for me... but lots of comercial kennels in us, uk and certainly majority is europe feed raw bone chicken as first solids... ie necks, quarter legs and wings...

of corse im not tell you its right to feed your dog boned chicken thats your choice im just saying i did the research and it seems to lack any fact to the rumours. i did find several professional accounts to back up my findings to.... Leerburg kennels basically give same advice for one...

chicken bones splinter.. here in america there are many dogs that end up in major surgery due to splintered chicken bones.. it gets also lodged in the intestinal track.. hooks up there and eventually causes an infection which then goes into the blood stream.. etc.. my hubby has lost a dog to chicken bones.. they were from cooked chicken.. but i am very fear ful of chicken bones.. i put the garbage up high when i have bones in it.. so maybe you know more about this then i do.. but they are tabooooo to me ... all bones.. except huge soup bones.. and then i even worry.. because some dogs break their teeth..

100% COOKED BONES CAN KILL. think we all agree with that. Like ive said as far as i can find and after speaking to endless breeders, kennels, vets and owners. as well as zoo keepers with wild dog experience. there is not 1 account of a raw bone splintering but lots have said no raw pork bones but chicken every1 seems to agree its cooked chicken that leads to that belief....

I dont want anyone reading this to just take our words for it these diets are great but as mentioned require a lot of effort and cost to maintain your dogs on and appropriate research of your own is always best to find what route and info you feel most comfortable on.

What about bulldogs? They are supposed to have less than 25% protein in their diet.

bulldogs??! british? french? american? boston? olde thyme? whytes.... :nilly:

take it thats british with stupid health issues... well in all honesty it shouldn't have been breed in the start, sooner KC ban brit's from competing for 5years n let breeders do some serious work on the breed the better until then people buying dogs off breeders should stop funding animal cruelty and get wise... If you do own a british... im sorry i do love all dogs just people namely breeders are uneducated or ignorant and destroying the breed....

More on point best bet with any specific requirement like that is to consult a good local vet for professional advice...

your absolutely right.. every dog is total individual..........you must make up his diet to be good for him.. keep him at a healthy weight etc.. keep his teeth sharp and clean.. and keep him energetic and bright.. no two will be the same.. this is just a basic diet.. you must research on your own.. and learn to make sure the dogs diet remains balanced........... even a healthy diet needs to be the right amounts of this and that...

Found this great site for pics of a breed i really love and thought id share.

My GF had never heard of them and sure most of you might not have to, they are Mongolian Banhar a mastiff related to the Tibetan. they are gorgeous in full flow...
here is the site: http://hotoch-banhar.weebly.com/9/post/2009/11/first-post.html great pics!

id love one! although looking at those pics and thinking how rare they are would be easier to just breed a caucasian with a tib and wait for one to come out... basically same genetics somewhere :nilly: i feel project... female tib, female CO. I'd like a male Central Asian Ovcharka and a female Kangal too. but think thats a few big dogs, hmm walking that lot would be dangerous... for too many reasons...

i like yours more.. these guys look mean... or they are making them look mean... alot like the chow chow.. only i really like the chow..

true Liz its not the ferociousness of these breeds that attracts me at all, i just have a thing for huge dogs and like everything rare breeds interest me.

and what you say about the pics, the Banhar are called lion dogs in the native land and i believe the pics are taken to make them look as mean and lion like as possible, none of those dogs look like they've had a real fight. certainly thats not what the pics depict jus trying to imply that but like all big mastiff breeds they are very dominant and in the wrong hands a accident going somewhere to happen.

the only dog with a true fighting heritage id own is on the list above, the kurdish kangal. simply put they are size of a CO with the drive of a Mal and the look of a Antilian (?spelling?) shepherd on steroids... but again it is its capabilities and looks that attract me not the ferociousness that some idiots seem determined to be obsessed with.

Im not saying that i dont see these dogs as home protection lol far from it. its just not my priority... My dogs will only be trained for work there temperament and personality makes them suitable for. if they make the grade for bite-work and schutzhund or PD working stakes they will get trained in it, if not they dont at all... im not looking to have animals taht i cant control or are a danger to anyone. we have stupid laws, stupid gun laws and stupid home protection laws... but u still get away with ur big freaking dog castrating a burglar... thank god we have that still at least... Come for my aros will ya...

Lol i have soft spot for chows, if a GF ever demands sumint smallish and cute they will get a short list of blue chow or shiba inu :headbang2
do u remember this guy Liz, my friends Shiba! the main reason id have a Shiba is this guy...
