Big dovii and hole in the head

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No no thanks very much. This is awesome! I never thought or knew of half this stuff. I was actually afraid of doing too many water changes. The fish is very hardy so I never treat the water but I will certainly try and monitor it from here on..
I know I need a bigger tank and that is in the plans. I sure did notice a change in behavior when I went from a 75 to a 120. But how big ultimately do I have to go? I mean he is 19-20in now he better not get much bigger I hope.
I was reading some of the threads on here I can’t believe some people try and keep these fish with other fish or even think they will be able to. Yeah if you have a 600gallon I could see but if you have a tank that big you should know what your doing. Heck I have to keep small children away from my tank.

for a fish thats 20", i would recommend a 180. I dont know the dimensions of your 120. But a footprind of 6 ft long and at least 24" wide would be good for a tank buster that size.
He would feel better i'm sure. More room to swim always feels better.

Plus, with fish tanks the bigger the better. The larger the volume of water, the more room there is for error.
Meaning if you skip a water change, it will be more detrimental in a smaller tank because there is less water volume to dilute toxins.

So getting a larger tank is not just about the extra swimming space. Its about the water quality too.

... and i agree with Pokkerfeen. he makes that tank look like a goldfish bowl. LOL

btw, in the video, that isnt the 120. That's the 75 right?

No in the video it's the 120. The tank is 24in deep and 24in tall. I like the dimensions of this tank it's a little deeper then most other tanks I saw at this size.
I will try and figure out how to post some pictures of him in the old tank then in the new one etc.

Those are cell phone quality sorry. I'll have some better pictures taken next week.

The short answer is: hole in the head (in freshwater fish) is 99% environmental. A large dovii in a 120 should be getting a couple of 50-75% water changes a week......minimum.

So that tank is only 4 feet long?

No wonder that fish is crazy, he feels like he is in a coffin.

Congrats on keeping him 9 years, most people around here keep their fish about 6 months............tops

You mention that you are not sure if the dovi has HITH but you can clearly see it in the video.
You posted that video in Aug'09 so he has had it for a while, and it looks quite advanced as well.....

yeah def bigger tank and WC are CRUCIAL!! what are your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, if you are feeding feeders and other messy things like shrimp then i bet your nitrates are through the roof if you arent doing massive and often water changes, test your water and let us know the exact numbers and that will allow us to know for sure whats wrong, def no more feeders unless you breed them yourself as they can transfer parasites like already stated
