God this was back in the mid-late 1980's when I was at school-hard to remember. In around year I guess it grew from around 7" to 23" in a 4' long tank.
I gave it to London Zoo Aquarium who informed me later that they traded it with San Diego Seaworld.

LOL...do they still have it? I wouldn't be suprised.

Gosh, that sounds quiet quick and large at last that early.

But that makes it quiet more interesting to me because I can keep it seasonally with lower temps in the winter, but at last I cannot afford more than about 1,500 gal/6,000 liter for that fish by now. So it makes a very big difference if I have to recalculate in 1 year or in about 12 ;)

How did you get yours, I thought they are not native outside europe and actually as an ornamental fish it is not really interesting being imported, is it?

:)

Edited because of a calculating mistake

Like I said this was back in the mid-1980s before they were banned. They are plenty of places around now where you can catch them-this it was I find silly as its long been considered a native fish. They don't reproduce well enough to pose a serious threat to fisheries so I don't know what the problem is.
They're certainly not a longterm fish for home aquaria. Mine used to spend all its time in a pipe-I used to use a torch at night to view it. It was scary because it used to look bigger everytime.

Wels is a real monster... I heard they are vey agressive too... careful when feeding if you're keeping one...

Other big similar catfishes including the Wallago attu and Wallago leeri are cool contenders as well... nto so sure baout their agression though...
