I see lots of pictures of nice fish along with "eyeball" measurements, anybody ever actually reomove their fish and really measure it. After reviewing Modest Man's thread with the big dovi and hearing their estimate of 18 inches, it got me thinking.

My dovi, looks smaller than that fish. I am thinking about getting him out and measuring him.

When my Emperor cichlid died I did measure it and it was close to my gestimate of twenty four inches.I should have weighed it though.

for my old lemonfin barbs, I used the width of their 18" tank (actually 17" between the glass panels) as a guide LOL:

but it is true that people often over estimate the size of their fish.

not always, but often.

big barb, hope you got him a bigger tank

I have a photo in my gallery but I didnt load the one with the measuring.

i admit i eye-ball, but i usually give the benefit to the buyer, meaning i underestimate so they don't get ripped off.
One of my pet peeves in this hobby is getting a 4 inch w/ tail "6 inch" fish. and that has happened far too often.

i think if youre selling it, then yeah, a true measurement out of the water would be useful. but catching the fish and measuring just for the sake of knowing seems like to much hassle :nilly:

I've kept fish for 38 years. I can 'eyeball' anything up to about 24" and be accurate to within 1/4".
Same for tanks - anything up to 6' to within 1/2".

Interesting skill to have. It surprises people in all sorts of other situations.
