How did you weight that fish? While it is a nice big one and a pretty darn good catch I'm not very convinced that would be 35 pounds. Maybe 10 to 15 but there is no way that fish is 35 pounds.

I have seen way way bigger ones that where no where near 20 pounds. Tenn State record was a 37Lb fish and was much much bigger than that at 65 inches. One of the largest Longnosed documented

Check out http://www.longnosegar.com/ Bob has some huge Longnosed on there and few are above 20 pounds

I've never heard of a 60 LB one
length divided by girth will tell you about what a fish weighs that gar was almost 4 foot . I figured it between 25 and 35 pound and i have seen longnose gar as long as 7 foot in the french broad river were i fish i have been a guide on that river for years taking people out catfishing. So if you dont believe me it is just your bad judgement i guess .

You cannot get the weight of a gar by dividing the length with the girth. Without knowning the mean length and weight table for the species you have no formula to reggressivly calculate this.

Oh wow imagine this.... I just happen to have a Calculated Length weight table for Longnosed:
Mean L/W regression Lepisosteus Osseus:
(Midwest sample bias, Pre / post spawn weight averaged)
LENGTH (in.) WEIGHT (lbs.)
36 4.6
37 5.1
38 5.6
39 6.1
40 6.7
41 7.3
42 7.9
43 8.6
44 9.3
45 10.1
46 10.9
47 11.7
48 12.6
49 13.6
50 14.6
51 15.6
52 16.7
53 17.9
54 19.1
55 20.3
56 21.7
57 23.0
58 24.5
59 26.0
60 27.6
^ (that stuff is called science based on peer reviewed methods and data)

Until someone proves it, there are no 7 foot Longnosed gar. They do not exist unless they are proven. Of which no one ever has.... There are no records for them, there are none in collections there is zero evidence for the species reaching that size. The 6.5 foot 50LB listing (commonly cited) has been disputed due to the fact the river system it was caught in contains Naturally occuring Hybrid Atractosteus spatula X Lepisosteus osseus. This record fish also no longer exists in any form so can not be looked at again.

So unless someone brings one up that is larger the Max length of these fish has been cut to 5.5 foot and 42Lbs. No one has come up with one larger. Only two records exist of the fish above 40 Lbs
