Big male Festae: Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
females are worse!!! however my mate had a male that had a few screws loose! it was mental...killed 2 tiger oscars in 2 days!! both inwhich were 3-4 inches bigger than the male

Thanks for the replies and i don't mean to sound like a rude c**t here. But i'm not interested in hearing about Dovii's, Convicts etc. or how aggressive Festae are towards other cichlids, i've witnessed this bloke, at 6", beat the c**p out of a 10" Blackbelt and i'm against that violence side of it. Which is why this pair is housed by themselves (Divided most of the time.) Balton hit the nail on the head, please stick to the question at hand.

Opiate, was your friends male ever aggressive towards people?

I think what people are trying to say, in a lateral way is that all it is the potential nature of cichlids to be touchy including festae... I have seen a festae be quite people agressive and tank mate agressive to the max .There was absolutely nothing that could be done other than remove the offending fish. Take care and best of luck!

Progers, nice nice male. Pretty colorful for not having a mate!

Spot on, matey.

The main reason i'm asking is that i've been eager for another Managuense for quite some time now and there's someone interseted in my male Festae (To breed with his large female.). I really like the Festae but is he ever going to measure up to a Mana when it comes to a "wet pet" and the "backoff" attitude?

Even with Managuense, it's hit and miss with the super-attitude thing. My 12" managuense acts more like an Oscar than than a jag. He's like a big teddy bear always begging for food and will eat right out of my hand. Now it's a different story at cleaning time...put the syphon in the tank and he opens up a can of whoopa*s on the tube. LOL he's practically foaming at the mouth.

Marc, disregard if you already read my second reply but once mine was about 9"-10" he started getting what I call personable. He always flares his gills, nips at the glass, and will chase my hand all around the tank. I worked at a LFS for quite some time, and another thing I have noticed in dealing with many mature festae is that they tend to do better when they have some type of security not a wide open tank (refer to my second post). Also I have seen in many mature "Monsters" fast moving dithers freak them out. Its weird. For what it is worth, I am a little partial to festae, because mine has become so personable after maturation, so if you hang on to him you will have an awesome fish.
