what can i say?? i couldent stand letting my gf's betta swim in a jar no more, so i "accidentally" broke the jar while cleaning it. conveniently i had the 55g all reay and waiting when it happened

@ original poster......if you have the extra room in a basement, you COULD make a makeshift pond from an intex kiddie pool like most of us have done. you can buy the pool, insulation, wood for skeleton and even an OK pond filter for just over $500. that then gives you TONS of room for your pacu and many other fish. i know $500 isnt easy to part with, but you would most likely never need a single tank or anything ever again

Here too, my place is very close to yours. I like them steamed!
The ones for sale at the wet markets seem to have red bellies, it's another species. It's probably farmed here too, how do they overcome the cold of winter? I'll do some searching on this...

Hard as it it to face I think it's kinder to put them down with clove oil than to give him away to the 1st taker. There's no guarantee he's going to be properly taken care of unless you give him to a rescue somewhere or a knowlegable person-which are few and far between. It'd be worse for him to suffer in too small of a tank and bad water to that "1st taker" than being peacefully put to sleep.

if he's aware enough that he's fish needs much larger than a 55g, and feels bad about keeping him in one, i doubt he'll let the fish go to just anyone, since 95% of people dont have a tank much larger than he does

It's not totally impossible to find somewhere for him. I just adopted one in the same situation last weekend. Why is it that Pacus are always stuck in 55's? There must be something about the mentality of the owner of a 55 gallon tank that draws them to Pacus. Strange, Have you tried all of your LFS's? There's one near me that has a big pond and takes big fish. Do you have something like that near you? If not, you could drive him to mine, in VA Beach, or ship him there. Let me know if you need the name.
