It depends on the fish... Some move too much or are too skittish to get a tape on. But I'd say I'm within 1" -1 1/2"

What fish do u have in mind
 
I was thinking about the 20in ID shark i wanted to make sure that the size was right or close ive seen some crazy quesstamites.

Paroon- he really moves to much to know for sure ... But I try and guage it by the width of the tank, and the tankmates that I KNOW the size of ...

I can assure you he's a monster. At least 19" ... Probably 21ish ... And he's thick as he!l, he doesn't miss many meals
