For filtering I'm probably doing a decent sized w/d, ~75gallons or so. I'll probably have a large canister or 2 along with it, maybe an fx5 and an eheim.

if you are going to go W/D there is no need to spend the extra cash on the eheim you could get 2 FX5 for the cost of size of eheim you would need for that tank...

That's a good point, considering I'd have plenty of bio from the wet/dry and just need the canisters for mech.

Just from my own experience... I am a firm believer of the FX5... I would run 2 FX5's on that Bit@h... for the aros... I seen successful aro comm... but if your going to throw a jardini in the comm... you gotta' have 5 or more aro's... even at that, you'll still get fighting... could be alot or alittle fighting... It's one of those hit or miss deals... but I'll tell you, all it takes is that one aggressive fish to mess up your whole tank... aggression is like a ich, it'll spread through the tank...

Great advice guys. I gave up on the jardini though. No point in ruining a great tank because of one fish. Of the fish I have now, only the Jurupari will go into it, as they are compatible with arowana, as well as large, peaceful cichlids who can hold their own in a fight. Just how many aro do you think I can fit in there without problems? My tank should arrive in a month and a half, or at max 2 months. I'll post pics as soon as it arrives.

Oh, and check out this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=MuwLyy7nqRY

what is that fish that looks like a barb, but has a red and black striped tail? It looks awesome!!!

Mixing Jardinis with ANY fish...let alone another arowana is a risky proposition (see the sticky in the aro forum!). You would probably be better off sticking with just the silver if you want to house a whole bunch of different fish in your new tank (which sounds freakin awesome, btw!).

Congrats on the new tank...you know we wanna see pics when you've got it!

Flagtail Prochilodus. It's very peaceful but grow about 12". It'll eat the algae in your tank. They're pretty cool but will get bullied by aggressive cichlids.

*edit* Sorry didn't see your reply bushfishrox. I've never heard it called 'redfin' before. Onion, google Prochilodus and you should get lots of info.

Thanks balton, your info helped. And don't worry, the only cichlids going in the tank are eartheaters. In my experience they are extremely passive, even during breeding

Okay, tank is getting built. Now about the filtration. I have decided to build my own w/d, but how big should the sump be. Mind you, the aquarium is now going to be 84x36x30. This is approximately 400 gallons.
