So, my neighbor dropped my tank helping me bring it in the house, badly cracking a pane. A new pane will be purchased in a couple of weeks. I had planned to redo all the silicone inside before this happened (it's a little suspect).

This is a 186 gallon (60" long x 24" wide x 30" tall). The 60" x 30" pane broke. Like I said, I'm getting a new one to replace it in a couple of weeks. Can I go ahead with the reseal project with the broken pane in place (reseal all sides except for the broken one)? Or should I wait and reseal it all at one time after I replace the broken pane?

I'm just looking for something to do until I get the new glass pane. I'm pretty bored. I guess my only concern is the "old" silicone from the reseal I want to do in the mean time not sticking to the "new" silicone from the new pane coming in a couple of weeks.

So what say you, genious hive mind of monsterfishkeepers? Thanks in advance.:)

Absolutely wait.Silicone sticks to glass much better than cured silicone.
Go ahead and clean out all the old silicone, thats the time consuming part. The actual sealing only takes a few minutes anyway

Thanks guys. That's what I thought would be the better idea. I'm just bored. I've started cleaning out the old silicone. Any hints as to how to remove the thin "film" that's left after razorblading? Do I just keep scraping away?

Thanks again.:)

Yeah, just keep at it with the razor.

Here's an idea. Have your nieghbor pay you the retail price for the glass, but find your piece on craigslist. This way you can have money left over and your tank will be just as good.

Just what I would do.

I recently bought a piece of glass 96 x 48 x 1/2" for 30 bucks.

I've been looking on craigslist. The glass shop wants $114 for 60"x30" 1/2" thick (which isn't bad).

ah, I see...

well that is a good price...

I got a quote for a 96x36x1/2 at $325

I got prices from that $114 up to $600 and everything in between. I just called every glass place in the phone book and made them all give me quotes. When I got the two best prices, I called the ones who price match.:)
