Good luck with your rebuild..silicone is a pain.

Yeah, I know. I resealed a 10 gallon, lol. I had to do it a couple of times to get it right. But, it turned out to be good practice for this project.:)

Calking guns...masking tape...and nylon corner molders...(sold for tubs ect...) are your friends....LOL

I've already researched more than I care to admit, but I haven't seen anything about these nylon corner molders you're talking about. Can you please elaborate or post a link? Everything I've seen said to wet your finger and use that to smooth it out.

Also, I've gotten all the silicone out of the inside (I was planning to reseal the inside before the breakage due to suspect looking seals). But, I'm left with what looks like hard water deposits where the silicone used to be. It's like the water was under the edge of the silicone seals. What's the best way to get rid of these?

This is one heavy piece of glass I will be installing. From what I've read, it seems as if the silicone between the pieces of glass is the most important part of a leakproof aquarium. How do I make sure the weight of the glass doesn't squeeze all the silicone out leaving a bad seal? Or am I overthinking things? And concerning this, when removing the silicone form the corners, I may have gone into the seal between the glass pieces a teeny tiny bit (not all the way through). Should I be concerned? Will the resealing take care of that or should I just take the whole tank apart and start from scratch?

And, one more thing before I forget, what's the best way to make sure the glass is clean before applying the new silicone? I've heard alcohol, is that just rubbing alcohol?

Thanks a bunch once again.:)

wipe it off with denatured or rubbing alchol just before assembly and then keep your fingers AWAY from the joints. Human skin produces oils that will keep it from bonding. I don't have a link to the molders but you can pick them up in any home improvement store...they do a MUCH better job than wet fingers and produce a smooth...even joint.

You dont want bubbles between the glass but at 1/2" wide...to be honest...it's hard to mess it up. That's a LOT of real estate. More is always better however...and its easier to clean up extra silicone with a razor blade after your done than it is to add more to an air pocket. Do it in two steps and see if you can rent some glass handling suction cups. install the new pannel first and then put in the new inside bead.

Wow, the glass suction cups are an excellent idea! I hadn't thought of those. I've been kind of sweating how I was going to actually put the glass in place. Thanks very much for that bit of advice.:)

NP...you might also want to get a few ratcheting cargo straps (the light variaty) to use as clamps to hold everything in place. You can also cut a couple of pieces of 2x4 or 2x2 the exact length you need to use as braces until the silicone sets. The euro braces and frames will hold the top in place.
