Lepisosteus Oculatus ( Spotted Gar )
Greetings!
Since I'm new here at MFK, I just wanna say that this is absolutely the best site EVER in information and documentation purposes.
Really thankful!

Here's the deal.
I bough a Lepisosteus Oculatus 3 days ago and I'll be making a documentary of its growth. How it's eating, what it's eating, and maybe I'll even give you guys some videos of him eating mice etc when he gets bigger.

He's 4" by now, and I bought him for 300kr ( 1$ = 5.2kr ) so aprox 55 dollars.
I think that's a good price for one of these little babies!
I got him in a 110Gal right now, and when he gets bigger, I'll move him to my pond.

I youtubed a video of him swimming around, and you'll be able to see that video below.

The tank was missing plants when I recorded this video, but I assure you that it's been taking cared of.

You'll have to excuse me if I'm writing without taking notice of grammar and spelling sometimes. Since I'm Swedish, talking English isn't my best profession :naughty:

first off, Fantastic looking tank!! the fish looks happy in there!

on another note, such a big tank might prove bad for a gar that small. at that size, he could have trouble finding food in such a large tank(the fish looks skinner than it should be), but the main concern would be him freaking out and smashing himself into the walls, and might break his back in the process. also it seems that there is lots of current going on in that tank. be sure you have at least a dead collumn for the gar to rest in. finally, how big is he?

congrats on the gar and the tank looks great!

Thx man! :) Well I know there's lots of currents going on in the tank, but one of the pumps are set at MINIMUM, so that current is slightly smaller than the other one. My brother's a genius, so he calculated the currents movement and force, and put a piece of wood into the tank, and that spot is absolutely CURRENT-FREE xD
So my gar stands there sometimes when he's resting :)

And if you don't think he'll be able to eat, watch this ;) Just recorded it :)

He ate THREE neon tetras on 10 minutes :D He's a real hunter :3

it'll probably better not to have current at all.

he should be getting more than 3 neon tetras per feeding, i hope you know this?:D

Yeah, absolutely, but as I said, when I recorded this vid, he had eaten like 3 of them :P He can catch them whenever he wants to, so I guess he'll feed him self when he's hungry xD

Nice fish and setup. I agree that the tank might be a bit big for a fish of that size at the moment. Neons huh, isn't that an expensive feeder? When are you going to try some pellets and prepared food? By the way, welcome to Monsterfishkeepers!

THX man! It's just that I don't know what pellets to give.... I got these "small floating cichlid pellets ", but he doesn't find them interesting.
I really can't keep on giving him neons, cuz he has already eaten 6 of them now...thats 12 dollars.... :P 12 dollars a day won't work :/

I'd REALLY appreciate if someone could give me some advices on what to give him...what pellets, what meat etc...:nilly:

My gar loves to eat Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets. You could also try some market shrimp. Just break off a piece and stick it onto the end of a toothpick and wiggle it in front of your gar. Eventually he should snap it up. It's not always easy switching your gar over to food other then live feeders. Just don't give up.
