Anyone out there skip water changes or postpone due to the cost of water?

I have a few tanks and stay all over the nitrate levels and try to keep my water pristine.
But with that said I have had some $300 dollar / month water bills because I live in the desert and water is not cheap here.

When you factor in the pool, sprinklers, showers etc and then add the tanks I can see why someone in an area with high water costs may stretch out their water as much as possible.

Anybody else up against this?

I need to find a way to store my wastewater and reuse it for my sprinklers.

Not really, our water bill is higher than average but not an issue, electricity on the other hand.....

Yea, there is some pain there too with all the power strips packed with plugs.
The hidden costs of ownership I guess.

600G OF FISH TANK WATER COST ME $68 , BUT ELC is $ 210

i only do my water changes when needed by water tests but im understocked. my elec bill is huge though $1000 for three months eeep!

If you're a DIY kind of guy, maybe make some sort of distilling station in your back yard.

Maybe a large jug/cantine with your old tank water... the sun will heat it up and it'll evaporate. Collect that water vapor and reuse it. Create maybe 2 or 3 of these so that one finishes distilling as you are ready for a WC. This will minimize your water usage.

As for the left over garbage from distilling probably can be scraped or cleaned out every little while... i'm sure there's different ways aorund it.

^ my thoughts as well. Get 55gal plastic drums with lids and siphon your water directly into them out the back of your house (or wherever). From there you could probably find a way to irrigate your yard with it. Maybe a giant pump hooked up to your sprinklers drawing from the tank....not sure if you can get enough pressure in the lines this way, but maybe worth looking into.
