you could always set up some solar pannels to save on power to help compensate for that water bill

but those panels cost a small fortune.

I built a container, or you can purchase one of the plastic pond container and siphon fish tank water into it. Then use that water to water my garden.

I read that there is a meter that I can get the water company to install that measures the amount of water that goes into the sewage, because not all of the water that I use goes into the sewage. I am bill separately for sewage and water.

The price of a hobby!

Actually I think the OP makes a very cogent point. If you live in "Lost Wages" you should be seriously considering where your water bill is headed. Lake Mead is at record low levels. I live in the primary zone of the California Delta. Water is a serious subject out here. If you live in metropolitan Sacramento, for example, you should or will be considering how you control Nitrates in a Monster tank. I am on a well , but I am now required to have a flow meter in place . How long will it be before I am required to report usage. It is not a huge leap to expect a fee/cost to follow. At some point mechanical filtration is cheaper than water. As Mark Twain said " Whiskey is for drinkin', Water is for fighting over." Just my humble opinion.

Were i live in Colorado are water is still cheap so ill keep using it, but if it gets to expensive I guess Ill see the monsters and get some neons.

For the apartment we have now it's 50 bucks always. Doesn't matter how much you use. We change weekly, always.

I'm lucky waters cheap where I am. But as some people have mentioned, the electric can be a pain in the ***... Especially in the summer, tanks plus A/C is killing my wallet :[

If I were you I'd stock some easy to grow weed plants and let them take over the tank. I'm not saying skipping a water change is the best thing to do for your fish, but you could probably manage the parameters if you heavily stock your tank with plants.
