I haven't had much experience with many filters, but presently my favorite is my Cascade 1000. I can almost guarantee it's not a popular choice but I think it's because of it's low price that not enough people give them a chance. People assume that the more money you spend the better the product, unfortunately that's not necessarily the case these days. I've paid more for my Fluval and Rena and in my opinion my Cascade out performs them both. It's extremely easy to prime, I've never had it leak on me(knock on wood), comes with a spray bar and it's very easy to take apart clean and maintain. I was actually forced to buy it as I was low on funds and had an emergency situation caused by 2 Fluval canister failures in a row. When my third Fluval went I bought another Cascade to replace it and they're both functioning reliably ever since.
Last week, I helped my friend setup a Eheim 2262. It was my first time setting up a Eheim. That thing is a BEAST!!! I am currently using 2 FX5 on my 180. Since I helped my friend setup his 180 also about 3 months ago… he decided to buy me a 2262 also. WOOHOOO!!! The only thing is the filter is so big it will not fit inside my stand, not enough clearance. So measure before you buy one. So right now I can’t use. But I must say; the way the 2262 is designed it's a lot better than the FX5. The 2262 holds more media then my 2 FX5 combined and still have room for more media and looking at the design… it is a lot easier to clean. The only thing I do not like about the Eheim are the rubber hoses. Especially the intake hose, it is way to big and not very workable. The Fluval ribbed hoses are a lot better IMO.

Also, the double tap connectors were free with the 2262. The total cost of the filter was $370 without the media. My friend got 10 liters of Eheim Pro for $60 for 5L. We got them at a LFS. Gotta help out the Mom and Pop shop.

I currently run a 2250 modified with a submersible pump in my sump. This has allowed me to me to more than double the biomedia capacity and still run a wet dry.
Eheim will always be the standard that all others follow. No filter is as quiet and easy to service.
