Biggest fish for a 38g?

I love the look of electric blue JD, but the only LFS that has one wants $100 for a 4 incher.
Ouch.
If I can make it to a Big Al's soon, I'd like to actually see what's out there around here. 1.5 hours away though. Most of my locals just carry the standards.
m1ste2tea: mostly looking for a single centerpiece fish. Something that will help me in controlling the constant production of fry in the 29g. Flashy is nice, but not a necessity.
The wife picked most of the community inhabitants, plus a 5g betta tank, and now I want something for myself. It's Christmas time. me-me-me-me-me-me! LOL!

100 bucks for a EBJD? thats a rip off no matter what size. bichirs can do the fry control if you want that
I remember seeing two eight inch long fish living in a 38 gallon fish tank at a used book store and the owner said that they had lived in the tank for over ten years.
The exodons kinda freak me out, since I have a 2 year old with inquisitive fingers....and just watched some of the feeding videos on youtube. wow.
limpert, that is a pretty cool looking fish. Dunno If I'd find that one around here.
I actually was considering a firemouth in the community tank, as it is a heavily planted tank, but I did want some population to remain, and was worried it would take out all the fry.
The more i peruse the threads here, the more I think I should flip the tank and maybe go bigger, opening up some more possiblities, and more chance of appeasing the urge for a big wet pet tank.

Ok, plans have changed yet again. Christmas, plus my wife's birthday and other costs that have reared their heads have led me to the determination that I can't afford a bigger tank anytime soon, so I think I'm going to stick with the 38g. I've cleaned and leak tested it, and everythings good. Got a emperor 280 for $20 from Big Al's, and have a couple heaters already.
I have been reading more on the fish that you have kindly suggested, and was thinking about a single salvini, a pleco (clown or bristlenose) and possibly a shoal of 6-10 tiger barbs. I've read about salvinis beating up on other fish in a tank, but that was with breeding pairs...would a single salvini be a little less aggressive, especially with a shoal of tiger barbs as dithers?
