Bio ball trickle tower filter VS fluidized bed filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Same happened to mine when under pressure, sand backup into the influent pipe when the check valve didn't function properly.
As a result I removed the top and ran PVC pipe, hanging suspended into the FB. If it backs up, I unscrew the influent pipe, and clear it. You can see in the photo on mine, the effluent pipe (outflow) is located below the rim, allowing for a non-pressurized unit.

Fresh or salt, the biological concept is that same.
Where it may differ, if you were using the FB as a sort of refugium for organisms from a constantly agitated turbulent zone, that might be an interesting addition.

ok....from my exp. fludised bed filters are excellent for nitrate removal..the key is to not use sand at all..instead biodegradable polymers (polymorph , PCL ,PLA) or you can simply buy bio pellets..i would recommend adding a ball valve to control flow to pellets..you want the pellets moving continuously but low enough to allow bacteria to grow on pellets..also i would direct the outlet of the FBO towards the skimmer for best results...this is the best method of carbon dosing (imo)..and all you do is add more pellets when needed..DO NOT GET RID OF THE FILTER..ITS A NITRATE REACTOR...
