hey guys, i currently have a 75 gallon tank set up, if u check my page, i some lovely babies that are getting big. I bought some bio balls cause in about a month or so, i will be up grading my tank to a 200g tank. i tried to fit the bio balls where my filters are, but no luck, they wont fit. (two 70 g Fluval filters) If i just throw the bio balls in the tank, and have them sit there for about a month or so, will beneficial bacteria grow on them?? and if not, any one have any ideas on how i can get benificial bacteria from my tank and transfer it to the new tank i will be getting?? i don't want to transfer the gravel.

Bioballs are really only effective when water is trickling through them. They aren't as effective as Ceramic rings when they are submerged. I would get some ceramic rings if you do not have a wet/dry filter. Beneficial bacteria needs oxygen to break down ammonia and others; that is why bioballs are especially effective; more effective than ceramic rings in the long run.

so can i float the bio balls or not?? how long will it take for beneficial bacteria to grow on them??

Floating the balls only makes your tank look ridiculous and is totally ineffective.

I disagree. I floted all my ball's that are currently in use in my wetdry's..... After about a week of them floating you can see stuff growing on them (im assumeing BB) Even if it only helps a littel it still helping. :)

Maybe you could put the bio balls in a media bag and have the return water fall over the bag?

heathd.... i like ur idea.. and it seems like most of u guys are saying it will work.. im planning to get a sump for the 200. thats why im getting the bio balls ready now, so when i get the tank, everything will be ready. i figured once i get everything set up, i will let the tank fun for a week, then but my babies in.
