Respectfully, a mixture of particle sizes and shapes is generally not a good idea if your objective is to increase the efficiency of the purification process. This is because this mixture creates tremendous inconsistency in the flow of water through the particle bed. The ideal particle shape is spherical, with a diameter considerably smaller and with a much higher surface texture than plastic bioballs. Ceramic cylinders of approximately equal size have a higher "theoretical" surface area, but IMO, Ehfisubstrat Pro is about as good as you can get for canister filter biomedia.

I'm my own pimp...that's gotta make some difference...

Everybody knows, pimpin' ain't easy...

Now, who want some??!, I got it goin' on right here, baby!!:D:D:D

Do they have a 12 step program for scrubbies? :naughty:

Pot scrubbies are cheap and they probably provide adequate surface area to serve as biomedia in many tanks. However, it really is not possible for them to have a higher surface area than a comparable volume of a particle comprised of sintered quartz or other highly textured surface.
