Are you saying that various BB colonize on various surface areas? That different BB are more prone to colonize on a preferred surface area?

Yes

There are actually several hundred species of bacteria alone that can undertake nitrification. Nitrosomonas and nitrobacter are only two of the genera with this capacity. Obviously under such a large selection of bacterial species you will find different species that like different surfaces. One thing you also have to keep in mind is that a lot of other bacterial species, for instance many heterotroph species, also like biofilter surfaces.
