I've used pot scrubbers for a year or so in my salt tank
They seem to be better then the balls but I still have a few in there that I used to seed scrubbers my ammonia and nitrates are always fine
And I haven't noticed them falling apart or deteriorating
I would go with scrubbers
Or both

pot scrubbies have been shown to be better due to the reason you already stated, they have more overall surface area.
I have yet to try the scrubbies, never heard of them untill recently but they do seem to be a better choice in a trickle filter.
