Bio Balls

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mechanical Floss first then Biomedia then Chemical media, carbon, Purigen, polyfilter done it for 20 plus years with great results.

Carbon is not required if your water parameters are correct.

Carbon used to be recommended because the average person didn't know about the nitrogen cycle and carbon was an inexpensive bandage to a unknown problem for many.

Carbon has a very specific job in my tanks. Whenever I am medicating a tank, using methylene blue for whatever reason, have excess tannins in the water and need any of these things removed, I use carbon.

Other than that, if your tanks are clean and healthy, there's no real reason to use carbon (i.e. smell or color.)

Why spend money replacing something that isn't necessary, and only covers up problems. I don't know about you, but if my tank is having issues, color and smell are great indicators of it, and I'd want to know about it, as opposed to carbon just removing the color/smell.

I was wondering for hob filters should I just put scrubbes/bioballs/ceramic rings instead of the media filters tht go with it??

Carbon if it is a fish-only tank and you are feeding super stinky food like Hikari sinking pellets or massavoire.

HOB filters like the magnum 250 should be filled with bio in the center and a foam outer to keep the bigger detritus out of the bio balls, I use to run 3 HOB magnum 250s and they were a pain to keep clean and running smooth, if you have a choice go with a sump.

Still not needed if your bio media is working efficiently. As Laticauda mentioned, only real use it should have in an aquarium is for the removal of medications after treatment.

U apparently have not use Hikari's sinking pellet. No amount of BB is gonna remove the foul odour those pellets generate. Hikari claims those odour are mean to attract hungry monsters.

Fish have such weird sense of smell :screwy:
