My friends bio class is now doing an underwater Eco project involving setting up aquariums with native fish. Anyways they have a 20L with 2 small mouth bass, 1 fancy guppy and a creek chub. The tank is half full, no filtration or airiation. They caught them illegally at a local river and plan on releasing them in the same river when they are done. Anyways, i posted this in the lounge because I want to bring this to my professors attention and I have no idea about how to do this ethically and reasonably.

Since it's for school i don't see a problem with them being caught illegally as long as they are released back where they came from. I would, however, bring to his attention that he needs a filter on the tank and the water level must be filled or the fish will die. He should know this. How long will they be in the tank and what exactly is the project?

Call local fish and game and make an anonymous report

Leave anonymous letter to professor

Just throwing out ideas

Beex will probably tell you to keep killing the fish until they trashed the project altogether

The real wonder is how a fancy guppy and bass can live in the same tank.

If there caught illegally the school wont be to happy about that, i bet you could get the teacher in some trouble, thats what i would do

Talk to your teacher. Whatever you do dont call fish and game.

If you find out what he is doing IS illegal you can notify a responsible adult.

Snitching on a teacher is a good way to get yourself an F.

I think you are already over reacting to this situation, so dont go and do anything drastic on top of it. The "pond in a jar" is a pretty standard HS experiment - and for your information Ive seen guppies last a year or two in a completely sealed glass pickle gar (probably 3-5g)

Just have a talk with whomever is involved with the project and explain to them that some form of aeration and filtration will be needed or the project won't last very long due to die offs..Not sure about collecting the fish from the wild being legal because it is for school purposes,as someone mentioned earlier and I don't think they can be legally re released now either.
