Bio Media: Ceramic rings vs bio-balls vs pot scrubbies vs others

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agreed, Jay. Thanks for turning me on to it. I wish I would have bought more when I setup the sump because now it's gonna be a PIA to remove the sump.

Does ghetto mean inefficient? Or just inexpensive? They sure aren't high tech. Pretty sure after a couple years pot scrubbers are as efficient as new. The Eheim stuff will need to be replaced because it is clogged. By Eheim's own info it can't be cleaned. The pores are so fine bleach can't get the gunk out. I'll go ghetto.

The average pot scrubber has a surface area of roughly 2,700 square feet per gallon. Eheim's ceramic media is over 18,000sqft/g. It's a no brainer.

I'm not made of money. A year from now the ceramic will have less surface area than the pot scrubbers and need replaced. If you can afford it, more power to you.

If they ship to Canada, I'd take those in a heartbeat. But the research goes on as I plan to get my new media at the end of the month. I'm looking now into K1/K2s (after reading through another recent thread) and trying to identify whether they would be good for canister filters. Now it's down to Seachem Matrix, biohome and K1/K2s and trying to find which one is most efficient and cost effective in a canister for the long haul. I'll still have to check availability of biohome and K1/K2s locally and hopefully figure out my decision come month's end.
