What could I use in my magnum besides the activated carbon it comes with??

You can put any bio media in the housing you like, and can find a place to fit it... rings or similar can be placed in the center instead of carbon... sponges can be placed outside the basket...
bio media will be a bit more effective in lower current areas of the housing (allowing more dwell time for the bacteria to do what it does)...
But all in all... in my experience fancy bio media is not necessary to host bacteria. Provided an aquarium is properly cycled and allowed time to mature, there will be planty of surfaces in any system to host bacteria...
