If a cycled aquarium has zero ammonia and zero nitrite... there is enough bio-filtration taking place
There is an argument that adding additional bio media will accommodate the bacteria in multiplying if/when it is necessary to do so (such as the addition of new fish). I question the legitimacy of this view based on two thoughts A) there is likely plenty of existing surfaces in the aquarium to house the expanding bacterial colony, & B) In a canister filter there is no more oxygen in the water than anywhere else in the system therefore bacteria is not any more likely to grow here than anywhere else.
I fully accept I have somewhat non-conventional views on this and feel free to do with my opinion as you please.
I use the Micron Cartridge with the Blue sock over it in my Magnum HOTs
I do not use carbon in any of my aquariums...
