Bio media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
NO????

It sounds to me that you're telling us that Matrix can house nitrate eating bacteria. So all I would have to do is use this media and my nitrates will go down. I don't think I have very much Nitrate eating bacteria in my current bio.

I thought Nitrate eating bacteria were much more difficult to come across in our tanks. I have read people going to great lenghts to establish it. Didn't know it was as simple as running the right flow rate through the right bio.

A lot of saltwater people have been doing this for years as a replacement for live rock in their submerged sump systems. It's not just about the flow and the right bio, but also by the right amount of bio. It takes significantly more matrix to consume nitrates than it does to produce them.

Not that anyone probably cares

But

I did go and get the filter socks and the stuff to hang them today
Just need to drill holes in containers...wash media
And then I should be ready to gut the sump and get it setup properly.

I did only have 50 micron socks to work with......The next ones they had were 25....so I stuck with the 50m
Should have this setup here in 2 days at most if things go right

Let us know how it goes and how you set them up. It would be a good read for us people who are planning on getting them and for others who are thinking about it.

I sure will...I'll have some pics posted when completed as well...

I'm going a bit of a different route though than explained to me....

Instead of ripping out the center divider..I'm gonna leave it cause there is enough room to add the filter socks and bio media to the one side that currently hold the bioballs.....

I just need to gut that side and place everything over there.....Atleast whoever built the sump-did something half way right when installing the intakes (although thats about the only thing right).....

My tanks water is already nice when I dont have any problems...Adding this stuff is going to be sooooo much nicer.....And my pics will get alot better too once this is completed

Sorry I didn't get pics posted yet.
I had acouple complcations.

But overall it is setup and going....I have 2 50 micron filtersocks polishing my tank now-even after only 2 hours I managed to see a huge difference in water quality.Although the socks clogged rather fast...I washed them out and reinstalled them yesterday.....By the time I get their today i am sure I will have to rinse them again. But it shouldn't be long until I am at the 50 microns....

On another note-I found out that I am going to have to eventually scrap this sump and setup a new design.....This thing is a nightmare in the plumbing dept....it's old and fragile as is....
I have a local company called greer tank. They make most of the tank to hold water up here for villages and what not....I am going to buy one of them in the 220 gal range and plumb it in here soon....If not I am going to be burning up pumps......

I have all the biomedia in and things are looking good.
Hopefully I will have time today to snap a few pics for those who helped me out.....

My fish greatly appreciate it everyone
As so do I

Cheers
Ak

Actually having it exposed to the air is suppose to increase the bio load somewhat.

Good to hear it works but it sucks that your plumbing and sump just aren't right. At least you get to learn on old equipment so you should be set for new gear and you can get a sump made to your specs ready for filter socks.
