Bio reactors and medication?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most of my media was floating. I run a lot of air to that reactor - 6.5 psi 5.2 cfm. Just cutting the air helped a bunch in keeping the media wet. I should have more then enough rings in there to support the entire system, and same with pot scrubbies/bio balls. Been testing over the week and all seems well with the filter.

When you had the gillworm problem what kind of symptoms?

Is there an active ingredient in Tramazol? Doesn't seem it's available over here. Wondering if there's anything similar?

Thanks!

The active ingredient in Tremazol is in fact Praziquantel (prazi) It comes in liquid form with this product rather than the powder form.
The symptoms of gill fluke in rays is...
1 loss of appetite
2 when viewed from the front you can see that one of the spiracles in under performing, this is usually coupled with an intermittent cough (interruption) between normal breathing.
3 The ray breathes fast and heavy from one spiracle, you can easily see that one half of the thorax isn't expanding, they should both work simultaneously.
4 During all this the ray is inactive, a ray that never moves but breathes heavily is in trouble.....check water parameters first.

So is Albendazole and active ingredient within Tramazol.

Thank you so much Richard.

How long would you recommend treating for? She's already had a 3 day Prazi bath. Wondering if I should redose just to be safe?

I'm sure if Shadow says there is Albendalole then there probably is, I have now thrown the bottle away so can't check. The fact you have to do an 80% water change 6 hours after using Tremazol would indicate that there is, with Prazi, I have never done a water change but did retreat after 1 week to make sure, this will be more beneficial than probably consecutive days, a treatment 5-7 days after the initial one is more likely to break the cycle of the parasite.
My guess is Prazi will do the job, you should soon know as the symptoms will ease within a couple of days, it certainly does with the Tremazol......fantastic medicine for rays and completely safe.
Hope this helps Alan.
Ps
Tremazol is marketed in the UK by Sera.

After 3 days of Prazi she seems normal again and is pouncing on food again.

In the past I had quit treating once they start eating again. Maybe that's where I've been going wrong.

The female I lost was breathing very heavily. Now I feel stupid for not acting on it. The reason I was so quick to act on this particular female was the one speracle thing, the other was just breathing heavy. The breathing changed the first day. Wish I would have known.

Seems that Sera company has several Meds I'd be intrested in having..... Seems they ship over here too....

Thanks again Richard. Having sick rays is not fun, having no answers makes it even worse. Thank you for shedding some light on this.

Al, I was going off of your spelling which you spelled Tramazol, it is Tremazol which is by Sera. But when you go to their site they don't list it there. Main ingredient Tremazol is Praziquantel like Aquaman stated. As for as Treatments with Prazi, I would treat for a week to 10 days give them a break for a week and then retreat to get any possible new hatches from the pathogen cycle. At least that is what was recommended to me in the past for any type of parasitic pathogens.

Here is the link to Sera's website with their medication list.

Obviously you already found their site.

when i had that parasite problem a few years back i had to treat a few of my rays for about 3 weeks before i could tell they were gonna bounce back 100%. isn't a reg prazi treatment 1 week?

I think it's 5-7 days but can retreat after 3?

I need to find a place that sells the stuff in pony kegs. :(
