Hi,
The function of "biomedia" is to provide adequate space for bacteria to proliferate. These bacteria convert the ammonia (very toxic) produced by fish into nitrite (also toxic) and then nitrate (relatively nontoxic). They will live on any surface of the tank, be it driftwood or gravel or glass.
