Would it be better to just get already established water from another tank with fish, and maybe get some of the gravel that was in it and put it in a little bag or container so that the needed bacteria can develop? Try that ! ; P

Not really.... the water in your tank isn't where the major concetrations of bacteria live..... gravel of the spong out of the filter would be your best bet.

It's all about the tank, not the fish. every tank needs to cycle. if you don't have sponge from another tank, what about filter floss or even just gravel? the amonia waste from the fish (just from respirating) should feed the bacteria. don't feed the tank for a few days either. I'd test the water daily and be ready to do lots of water changes! what about putting a devider in another tank while this tank cycles?

pretty solid idea smowman! thats again to everyone for the help. FYI the tank is cylced and the fish are doing well except for the calvus. the guy that sold them said they die easly and boy is he right. the water is perfect and I feed them every day on time. I'm now down to 5 calvus and the yellow labs are all there.

I noticed today that 2 of the yellow labs have no color at all! is this normal? has anyone ever seen this?
