well i have a penguin 150 biowheel for my 29 gallon tank that is not running at the moment i used to have the filter on a old tank but that was awhile ago. my old bio wheel stop spinning on my old tank i remember so i wanted to get a new one but i have not found any stores around me to carry that bio wheel, so do i order one online and almost 20 dollars all together counting shipping or do i buy a all new unit or get a aqua clear one? I would like to save some money since im in the middle of setting up a 55. So any suggestions would be great to be honest im thinking about getting the aqua clear just because i remember them being cheaper and get the biological and chemical filtration. Also dont have to worry about the wheel not turning since ive had that problem already.

There is a petsmart near me that sells replacement wheels for the biowheel HOBs. May be worth taking a look at that or a lfs before you completely ditch the old HOB. I still have a penguin 160 that i have ran since 92. I love the thing!

When mines stop spinning I remove the wheel and clean the spindles with my fingers. Next remove the purple end holders that the wheel spins in and clean those as well. Put them back on and your wheel will spin like new.;)

Hey man i have a few emperor 400's they do the same thing.... Its very normal for them to stop spinning, or spin irregularly... just take it out, clean each vein (all kinds of crap (litreally) will come off), as stated above remove the purple lock pins and clean them as well... When you put the bio wheels back on they will probably spin irregularly for a while... "YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO CHANGE THE BIO WHEEL EVEN IF IT IS NOT SPINNING". Thats what my emperor says of the package unless you have a catistophic failure where the wheel tears in two.... So i hope this helps

I have a few bio-wheels, when they start spinning slowly or stop it is usually time to clean the uptake tubes, impeller and the hole that they sit in I usually use a bottle scrubber to get in there, rinse it out a couple times after and it runs like new for 2-3 months then I have to do it again.

x2 my moms 200 stops about every other month and after routine maintenance goes on spinning.

swish it around in some tank water, clean the spindles and holders, next clean out the spray bar. it will spin after that.

Im starting a new tank and was wondering if i can re use the bio wheel filter, its been sitting around for awhile u think this will be a good idea or just go get new one. i put it in some water and cleaned it.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as it isn't overly dirty, it will still have to go through a full cycle just like a new one.
