On my 100g I use a Eheim 2026 and a large internal filter. The 2026 has substrat pro & ehfimech in it. I've recently seen some bioballs for sale for use in canister filters-would these be better biologically than my current media? I thought bioballs were only used in sumps or wet dry systems. Thoughts would be appreciated cheers

It depends on the type of fish you have. The substrat pro has a larger surface area but would clog and reduce the flow through through your filter.Bio balls are great for big fish which produce alot of waste as they do not clog up so you can maintain a good flow rate.

on an eheim, no the ehfisubstrat doesn't clog and reduce the flow. They have powerful, torquey pumps.

I used to have bioballs and sponges in a 2217, as that's the only spare media I had at the time, then I filled it up with ehfisubstrat and lava rock, no difference in flow rate at all.

Go with the ehfisubstrat, in a submerged canister scenario, the surface area is light years ahead of bio balls.

Bio balls are only good for big fish and a lot of waste if there are gallons of them in a wet dry, in a canister they don't come close to ehfisubstrat.

thanks for the advice people-the tnak contains bichirs, garfish and Indo Dat but I think I'll go with the efhimech and Sub Pro

both are too ehfing expensive but I agree with zookeeper that the ehfiwhatever would clog sooner.

It wont necessarily restrict water flow but the pores themselves in the material could build up with debris and be very difficult to clean. If you had a good way to clean them this might be ok

Hope this helps

what rumble said.

There is no clogging up. That's why there is mechanical filtration before biofiltration...

In a 30 gallon sump would i be better off with filling it up with ehiem substrate and rena black filtars or bioballs

also i have these bioballs that are just plastic circles, are they just as good as regular bioballs.

i want the best filter i can make out of this sump

Howdy,

30 gal EhFisubstrat would be $$$. Bioballs or pot scrubbers are just fine in a sump.
