which if left uncleaned frequently, will reduce water quality, thus having a negative affect on its inhabitants. whereas if cleaned properly and frequently as needed will reduce its ability to be used as an effective biofilter. hence reducing it to a wter pump that needs constant attenion. do i sound smarter now?

I recently throw out my bio tower and placed 4 spong filters in the sump.

Sorry...I was not referring to the six white foam pads on the periphery of the media baskets, only pads which you may have inserted into the three central chambers.
