Biology class tank, ideas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
kdrun, I can relocate the giant, though my severum might eat him eventually. Could I keep a pair of kribs with 6 barbs, or would I be better off with a shoal of zebra danios and some swordtails?

I don't know anything about kribs, sorry I m the wrong one to ask if that will work. I simply don't know the answer.

My primary concern is if they will eat the barbs.

I have a common pleco in my 120, and I know well how much waste they produce. Ammonia only comes if/when your tank is uncycled. I am also very capable of googling "20 gallon long starter fish". I am looking for an experienced opinion from something other than a website. There are arrangements for the summer, though admittedly I do not know what they are.

we had a 55 in the classroom when i had bio, the teacher let me catch bream for it had some mudbass, sunfish, looked really good particularly the mudbass, they were all learning to eat flakes it was all good, and then she put goldfish in it and they all died of ick -__-

one thing to watch out for though, about a year later some idiots dropped pennies into both that tank with the goldfish and her smaller 20 gallon saltwater tank, killing everything inside. you have to remember that a lot of people in highschool are idiots, and once you graduate or even after this year are out of that class, the tank conditions are probably going to go back to as bad as they are now and the fish will probably die. it may sound morbid, but i wouldn't put anything in there you'd get too attached to.

Actually ammonia comes no matter as long as there are fish. Fish pee/poop= ammonia. And if the tank is overstocked, the ammonia is not converted fast enough and fish dies. Are the arrangements for summer someone comes in and tops off the evaporated water? Also what happens if during the summer someone washes all the biological filters? Or if someone fills the tank with untreated water?

Thanks :) I'm going to rehome the giant once I get the tank going/add some different fish, and I was thinking something along these lines;;;

6 Cherry Barbs
4 Swordtails
1 BN, RL or Bulldog Pleco, depending on availability
Then one "feature" fish, I don't really have any ideas. If it grows big for a 20, I can always move it over to the 120, but it's only got x amount of time before I would have to move it. Maybe a blue gourami?

The "summer arrangements" kept the current fish alive, and the tank isn't all that bad ATM, judging by the gravel. Worst comes to worst I'd get a 20long of my own and move them over during the summer. The filter is a fluval 205, It's got enough bio media. I intend on trying to make this tank legitimately educational. It's a grade 11 & 12 Advanced Biology room, so I would hope that the fish are safer from such things. If that's your 180 stock, I think I might just know more about proper stocking levels than you ;)
