I need to do this project for my biology (college) class, write a paper, make a poster blah blah. I was thinking on doing it on how the importation of a wild caught specie effects it in its natural environment. Any ideas for a species for this, or any other topics/ideas? any feed back appreciated!

I think that doing a wild caught species is a great idea....maybe take it a step further and do a species that is strictly wild caught? I mean you can write about a wild caught JD but there are so many being bred and sold in captivity that it probably doesn't have too much of an effect on the wild population whereas you could do your research about a fish that has never been bred in captivity and can only be bought as a wild caught fish. Does that make any sense? Good luck!

snake heads... I know they also have a problem with lion fish if you want to go more saltwater... even just african cichlids are a problem here in florida...

Yeah strictly wild caught, cant be bred in captivity is what I would prefer, but anything that is effecting the fish in its wild habitat mostly because of the trade would work.

tbh i can't think of a whole lot of fish "mainly effected" by the trade.. most of them have more pressure from over-havesting for food, or Habitat destruction then collectors. at least on the FW side of things.. and on the SW side medicinal purposes seem to be the major issue for over-harvesting. Maybe doing your project on a species that "common belief" is the trades fault in it's decline where the truth is habitat destuction or simply poor harvesting practices?... flip it around. alot is blamed on the hobby that simply isn't true. Most our native gar species have been hunted harshly on the popular belief they eat all the game-fish fry.. or in the case of alligator gar attack humans... when they play an important role of maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

maybe see about festae how the ecudorian race is ow ilegal to import

Banggai cardinal fish ! I was thinking of doing a project on them. Trade has really brought their numbers down, but they've been bred in captivity now and are making a comeback :D

Asian carp would be a good one. They are wreaking havoc on the Illinois River.
