biomax - approx weight to volume?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just buy $1.00 pot scrubbers. They work great and have a super high surface area.

But for other media, I always buy it off of Ebay. You can find it a lot cheaper that way.

I got the BioMax for the cheapest I could find. But, yeah, it's too much money in quantity. BioMax has more SA than Substrat (Pro) plus water is supposed to flow through it better...I've heard of it clogging in the FX5's. That is what we used in my mom's 2260, though. I won't get BM anymore...I'll get some of the cheaper stuff.

I have used scrubbies in canisters before and they didn't work so well, so I switched it out for BM. I use scrubbies in my wet flow.

This is such a misconception, scrubbies are only a good choice over bio balls to go into a wet/dry filter. Scrubbies only have 370 sq ft of surface per cubic foot and there are 28.3 liters per cubic foot. So one liter of srubbies has only 13 sq. ft of surface area:eek: How could any one choose this over any ceramic, or sintered glass media is beyond me:screwy:

I am interested in why you think eheim substrate is better. Eheim does not disclose the surface area per cubic volume of their media. I have some and the stuff is like solid marbles. I also have reefresh2o 5/8" which have 17 square feet each, and 1.25" spheres which have 130 square feet per each.

When I calculate the cost per square foot of surface area for reefresh I get $.002. I cannot find ANY biomedia that is this cheap per square foot. Reefresh is the only media that can give me 1.5 million square feet of surface for bacteria, and do it in a reasonable space.

Let's face it we strive so hard to give our fish great water quality, we feed them the best food, and the fish think "Hmmmm, good water, plenty of food. Let's spawn!" All of a sudden I have thousands of new fish in the tank. (even more for Koi).

I have no worries about changes in bio load in my systems.

the 9x9x4 block of the cell pore media is 1.4 gallons, 19,500 sq ft (according to website)

ehfisubstrat is 18,300 sq feet per gallon (according to the box)

cell pore is about 14,000 sq feet per gallon

based on drsfostersmith.com prices
cell pore is about $40 per gallon (for 9x9x4 block)
ehfisubstrat is about $35 per gallon (for a 5 liter box)

Is my math wrong?

and according to their website, 100 gallons of the 1.25 inch cell pore spheres is 1.7 million square feet surface area.
